Viewpoint
Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the willpower to act despite fear, emboldened by the knowledge that your actions will help you achieve an outcome that is far more valuable than surrendering to your inhibitions. Courage is being fully aware of risk but refusing to allow it to control you. Research suggests that one way to embrace courage is to actively recall similar situations where you overcame fears, and were rewarded with sound results. By regularly committing small acts of courage, you will condition yourself to use courage in all situations.

A student of philosophy was taking his final written exam at his university. The assignment for the 5-hour long exam was to write an essay on the topic, “What is courage?” The young man sat at his desk and thought for a little while. Finally, he scribbled something on the piece of paper in front of him, got up, and turned in the piece of paper. All he had written was: “This is.”
