Hands Up!

Remember that kid who sat in the front row of the classroom? The one who always had his hand up, waiting to ask the teacher an asinine question about some little point or to repeat themselves for a third time? Didn’t you just hate him/her? Wasn’t it just so frustrating to have to hear the same mathematical equation explained over and over or, worse yet, to hear the teacher say, “Interesting question.” and launch into a twenty minute explanation about the Polynesian War?

Now that you’re out of school, do you ever wonder about that kid? Ever wonder about how he got by in life with so many questions and such a dogged nature? The answer might surprise you. You see, what that classmate of yours was doing was preparing himself, loading up with not just knowledge but the ability to ask questions- the hard-to-learn act of questioning everything. People like that go far- whether it’s Isaac Newton questioning the assumed “Natural Laws” or Napoleon Bonaparte doubting the current military truths of his time. It is only when we question, when we are not afraid to question, that we can truly Discover.
