Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
June 10thWhat would little Jung (shown here at age 6) been if not for the work of Sigmund Freud?
What is knowledge? Carl Jung thought that, though the individual does have the chance to learn things on his own, much of our Wisdom comes from the experiences of those that came before us and the unconscious memes and Platonic Ideals that that make up the collective unconscious.
Well, old Carl may have had a point there but there’s no need to go that deeply in to it. Ask anyone who hasn’t created a brand new form of business or art (and even those who have) and you’ll learn that much of their time was spent studying the success and techniques of those that have come before them. Long before Jung discussed the unconscious, journeymen and apprentices of every craft and business in the world spent painstaking hours learning the rules and tricks that those who have practiced the same had found to work. Call it the Collective Conscious if you want, but nothing could be more obvious: you only get where you need to go when you follow, at least part of the way, the map left by those who came before you.
