EXTREME VACATION OF THE WEEK

This week’s extreme vacation is fun in its most unadulterated, or maybe it is adulterated, sense. The resort is Hedonism, and you can’t take the kids.  You don’t have to take a bathing suit either, because both resorts, Hedonism II and III, cater to nekkid people. In all fairness there is a place for those with clothes, but if that’s your pleasure there are better places to go. The food and facilities are fine, but when you’re going to a place with a name like Hedonism, what you’re really looking for is non-stop partying, and according to those who have been there, that is what you will find.

DIFFERENT, BUT NOT SO EXTREME VACATION OF THE WEEK

Let’s say you want to go to a really great beach resort, but prefer one where people are more or less covered and prefer a good Bordeaux to body shots. Consider Beaches and Sandals, a string of Caribbean resorts that pioneered what they call the super-inclusive concept, which includes everything. To illustrate the difference, a cruise ship is inclusive, meaning you don’t pay extra for food and drinks, as long as the drinks are coffee, tea, or juice. At an all inclusive resort, you get the food and can drink yourself silly, which many do. At a super-inclusive resort, once you have drunk yourself silly on “premium brand” drinks, you can water ski, jet ski, or parasail at no additional cost. (Don’t actually attempt this.) There are 11 Sandals resorts to chose from (couples only) and four Beaches resorts (families welcome).

Behind the keyboard

Judging from the tone of some of the emails we receive from time to time, it seems that some people think that the things they read on websites and in their email are spontaneously generated by a computer. That is not of course the case, a computer won’t generate content without someone hitting the start key.

If only it was that easy. Every funletter takes several days of effort. We must go though hundreds of articles, deals, and events looking for a few gems. Why bother? Because every week our mail boxes overflow with travel information, most of which are lists of supposed deals. We believe that travel is more interesting, and indeed fun, than that, and are working to prove the point. We’re not there yet, but over the next few months we’ll be adding features to make the funletter ever more useful and entertaining. We will also be encouraging more reader response with features such as polls and vacation rankings. Stay tuned.

We, by the way, is Keith and Jason West, co-founders of eGO.com and editors of the funletter. We have been building the site since 1996. You can read more of the story online at http://www.ego.com/company

Edinburgh supersaver from $539

Most of the European deals we see are to London or Paris. While those are great cities, there’s much more to Europe. Consider Edinburgh, the picturesque capital of Scotland that is one of our favorite cities. This deal from New York (other departure cities available at additional cost) gets you airfare and six nights accommodations plus a city tour.

Balconies from $699

Balconies are much better. Most of the low rates you see for cruises are for inside cabins, meaning no windows. This seven night cruise on Carnival Triumph to the Western Caribbean has great rates for what you really want, your own place to hang out and look at the ocean.
