As late as the mid 70's Duck was nothing more than a small collection of seldom visited buildings. All that has changed with the advent of Northern Banks tourism in the 80's. Fortunately, limiting commercial development to the strip along Highway 12 has allowed the town to retain charm despite its growth. There are a number of nice shops, several (mostly water-based) recreation opportunities, and single family houses in beach communities.
