These 3 contiguous villages on the northern portion of Hatteras Island are an outpost of private development on what is overwhelmingly a federally owned, undeveloped island. Developed might be a strong word for these towns. They consist mostly of houses on sticks and a few stores. The stores will cover the basics of what you need for a vacation, but if you want to do serious shopping or amuse yourself with commercial entertainment, you will be driving north to Nags Head. What people are looking for here is isolation, fishing, and the abundance of beach and National Seashore wildlife on either side of the villages.
