One of the first seven US life saving stations, the scene of many heroic shipwreck rescues on the Outer Banks 1874-1911. The site is now a museum and includes a video of the lives of the lifesavers on the Outer Banks and their equipment. The lifesaving station itself is under renovation, but it holds countless pictures of wrecked ships and other exhibits. Parks Service Beach Apparatus Drill every Thur. during summer at 2:00. The most prominent symbol of the Outer Banks is the "candy striped" lighthouse. The tallest brick lighthouse in North America is free to climb and is open Easter through Memorial Day day10-2, Mem. day to Labor day 10-4, and Labor Day to Columbus Day 10-2. The visitors center holds a history of the area and light, and is open 9-5 daily. 252-995-4474.
