For a large resort, Virginia Beach has few "attractions" of the modern, commercial type. Other than the beach and state parks, there are few major draws in Virginia Beach. For those willing to drift farther afield, there are more possibilities. Norfolk, along with some historical, cultural and military possibilities, is only 30 minutes away. A little over an hour up 64 is one of the premier attractions in the country, Williamsburg.
In Virginia Beach there are state parks such as False Cape and Seashore which offer trails for biking and hiking. The Virginia Marine Science Museum has the typically good range of aquatic exibits. Several historic sites include the Land and Lynnhaven houses from the early colonial period, and Fort Story which contains Cape Henry, the two Cape Henry Lighthouses, and the monuments marking the Battle of the Virginia Capes and the first settlers' landing.
Virginia Beach is also home to the Navy's East Coast fighter squadrons. The aircraft are visible from all over the city, but for a closer look, visit Oceana Naval Air Station or one of the public observation points.
